How to make a Roblox game with AI

The step-by-step workflow that actually works in Roblox Studio — what AI does well, what you still have to do, and how to prompt it.

AI can now do a real share of the work of making a Roblox game: write Luau, place and edit parts, build UI and even run a playtest. What it can't do is turn one sentence into a finished hit. The people getting good results treat AI like a fast junior developer — they plan, ask for one feature at a time and test every step. This guide shows that workflow from idea to published game.

There are three kinds of AI tools for Roblox. Chatbots such as ChatGPT or Claude write code that you paste into Studio yourself. Roblox's own Assistant lives inside Studio. Agent plugins — Rateblox, Lemonade, Ropilot and others — connect an AI to your open Studio so it can read your place and make changes directly. We compare them in the best AI tools for Roblox Studio.

What you need

  • A Windows PC or a Mac. Roblox Studio does not run on phones, tablets or Chromebooks, and every AI tool that builds in Studio needs Studio open.
  • Roblox Studio, free from create.roblox.com, signed in with your Roblox account.
  • An idea small enough to finish. A tycoon, obby or simple simulator, not an open-world RPG.

Making a Roblox game with AI, step by step

  1. 1

    Write a one-page game plan

Before any building, write down the core loop — what the player does over and over — plus how they progress and what you might sell. AI is very good at helping with this; ask it to turn your idea into a plan like this one:

    game-plan.txt
    Name: Lava Run Tycoon
    Genre: Tycoon + obby
Core loop: claim a plot → droppers make cash → buy upgrades
→ every 5 upgrades unlock a short lava obby with a cash prize
Session: first upgrade in < 30 s, first obby in ~5 min
Saving: cash, bought upgrades, rebirth count
Shop: 2x Cash game pass, Auto-Collect game pass
Not now: pets, trading, quests (later updates)

The “Not now” line matters most. Every feature you cut is a week you get back.

  2. 2

    Set up Studio

Create a new place from the Baseplate template and open Explorer, Properties and Output from the View tab. Output is where errors show up; whatever AI tool you use, you'll read it a lot. Save the place to Roblox early so you get version history.

  3. 3

Build the core loop first, ugly

Ask for the smallest version of the loop that you can play: grey blocks, no UI polish. For a tycoon that's a claim pad, one dropper, a conveyor and a collector — our tycoon tutorial shows exactly what that looks like. If the loop isn't fun in grey blocks, art won't save it.

  4. 4

Add one feature per prompt, then press Play

Leaderboard, then saving, then buy buttons, then UI. After each one, press Play and check Output for red errors. If you ask for five features at once and something breaks, neither you nor the AI will know which one did it.

  5. 5

Make it look like a game

Once the loop works, ask for a theme: materials, lighting, a skybox, sounds, a proper shop UI. This is where you should be most hands-on — players decide in seconds from your thumbnail and first view.

  6. 6

    Add monetization and publish

Add one or two game passes, then publish the game, test it on a phone with the Roblox app and invite a few friends before you share it widely.

How to prompt AI for Roblox

The same rules work in any tool:

  • Name the place in the hierarchy. “A server Script in ServerScriptService”, “a LocalScript in StarterPlayerScripts”. Most AI bugs are scripts in the wrong place.
  • Name objects exactly and keep those names. Scripts find things by name.
  • Say server or client. Money, damage and purchases belong on the server. Only UI and input belong on the client.
  • Paste the error. Copy the red line from Output word for word. It usually contains the script name and line number.
  • Ask it to explain. “Explain this script line by line” is the fastest way to learn Luau.
prompt examples
Good: "In ServerScriptService, add a server Script that creates
leaderstats with an IntValue named Cash for every player.
Save Cash with DataStoreService and don't overwrite data
        if loading fails."

Vague: "make my game better and add money"

Common mistakes

Expecting a whole game from one prompt

Tools that promise this produce a demo, not a game you can update. A small game is realistically a plan plus a handful of build steps, with your own testing in between.

Pasting code you never run

Chatbots sometimes invent API names or use old ones. Press Play after every change; an error caught right away takes a minute to fix, ten stacked errors take an evening.

Inserting random free models

Toolbox models can contain hidden scripts — backdoors that let someone else control your game. Check every model's scripts before you keep it, or build from parts.

Step-by-step guides by genre

Each one has the core loop, the systems you need, a build order and a complete key script:

Need a single piece instead? The Roblox script library has kill bricks, leaderboards, data stores, doors, checkpoints and more.

FAQ

Can AI make a Roblox game for me?

AI can write the scripts, build parts and UI, and with an agent plugin even test in Play. It works best one feature at a time from a plan. It cannot reliably turn one prompt into a finished, fun game; you still decide the design and test it.

Can I make a Roblox game with AI on my phone?

No. Roblox Studio only runs on Windows and Mac, and AI tools that build in Studio need Studio open on that computer. You can plan the game on a phone, but building needs a computer.

Do I need to know Luau to make a Roblox game with AI?

Not to start. AI writes the Luau, and you can ask it to explain any script. Learning to read Output errors and basic Luau makes you much faster at fixing problems.

Is it allowed to use AI to make Roblox games?

Yes. Roblox ships its own AI Assistant in Studio. Your game still has to follow the Roblox Community Standards and must not copy other creators' names, characters or assets.
