How to connect Claude or ChatGPT to Roblox Studio with MCP
Give your own AI app hands in Studio: it reads your place, edits scripts and playtests — set up with Roblox's built-in server or Rateblox.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way to give an AI app tools. Connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to Roblox Studio through an MCP server, and the AI can read your place, create parts, edit scripts and run playtests itself — instead of you copying code back and forth. There are two ways to do it today. This guide covers both.
Two ways to connect
| Roblox Studio MCP server | Rateblox MCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Roblox, built into Studio | Rateblox |
| Runs | On your computer, next to Studio | Online at rateblox.com/api/mcp |
| Works with | AI apps on the same computer: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI | Those, plus claude.ai and ChatGPT in the browser |
| Extras | Official Roblox tools, mesh and material generation | Ready game systems, curated Creator Store models, one-call player tests, a second-opinion visual review |
| Price | Free | 1 Rateblox credit per task (from $12 / month) |
You pay for your AI app in both cases — the AI does the thinking, the MCP server gives it hands in Studio. The two servers can be connected at the same time.
Option 1: Roblox's built-in MCP server
- 1
Turn it on in Studio
Open the Assistant panel (the button on the right of Studio's top bar), then
⋯ → Manage MCP Serversand turn on Enable Studio as MCP server. - 2
Connect your AI app
Studio offers quick connect for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and VS Code. Pick yours and follow the prompt; Roblox's MCP documentation has the manual setup.
- 3
Ask for a change
The AI can now run Luau in Studio, edit scripts, start and stop Play, take screenshots and generate meshes. Keep Studio open while it works.
Option 2: Rateblox MCP (works in the browser too)
- 1
Install the plugin and open your place
Sign in at rateblox.com, install the Rateblox plugin in Roblox Studio, link it to your account and open the place you want to work on. Studio has to stay open while the AI builds.
- 2
Add the server to your AI app
The server address is
https://rateblox.com/api/mcp.- Claude (claude.ai, Desktop, mobile): Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. Name it Rateblox, paste the address, leave the OAuth fields empty.
- ChatGPT (Plus and Pro): Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced → turn on Developer mode, then Create, with OAuth authentication.
- Cursor and other MCP apps: add the address; apps without OAuth use a personal token from the Connector tab in Rateblox.
Claude Code (terminal) claude mcp add --transport http rateblox https://rateblox.com/api/mcp - 3
Sign in and allow
Your AI app opens rateblox.com. Sign in and press Allow. In Claude Code, type
/mcpto sign in. - 4
Turn it on in a chat and ask
Enable Rateblox in the chat's tools menu, then describe what you want:
first prompts "Look at my place and tell me what's in Workspace and ServerScriptService." "Add a leaderboard with Coins that saves between sessions. Test it in Play." "Coins don't save when I rejoin — find the bug and fix it."
Tips for building with an AI app in Studio
- Use the strongest model you have. Building in Studio is a long chain of tool calls; bigger models make fewer mistakes and recover from errors better.
- Ask for a plan first. “Plan this, don't build yet” gives you a chance to cut features before tokens are spent.
- One feature per request, then ask it to test in Play. The same advice as in making a Roblox game with AI.
- Save to Roblox often. Version history is your safety net if a session goes wrong.
Why not just paste code from the chat?
You can, and it's free. But the AI can't see your place, so it guesses names and locations, and you do all the testing. With MCP it reads the real hierarchy, makes the change and checks Output itself.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT connect to Roblox Studio?
Yes, through an MCP server. Roblox's built-in server runs locally, so it works with desktop apps such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor. To use ChatGPT or claude.ai in a browser, the MCP server has to be online, like Rateblox MCP.
Is the Roblox Studio MCP server free?
Yes. Roblox's MCP server is part of Studio. You still pay for the AI app you connect to it, if it is a paid plan.
Does the AI need Studio open?
Yes. Every MCP connection to Studio works through the open Studio window, so keep the place open on a Windows PC or Mac while the AI works.
